Amtrak Explaining Playground Move with No Community Input
or at least trying to…
6PM: Meeting was moved last minute to VIRTUAL https://static1.squarespace.com/static/6299fa9e9d9f661e4f0b4397/t/659def550bd1cb790a9ec1aa/1704849237846/fd-tunnel-park-relocation-virtual-meeting-flyer-010924.png
On the playground…
Current plans are only to move it on a temporary basis, for approximately one year, to the corner of Brice and Lanvale.
It was pointed out that that location is directly next to the construction zone and directly on some of the delineated truck routes for the construction. It was also pointed out that the spending all of that taxpayer money for a temporary move just doesn’t make sense, when there is a great need for augmented playground facilities at the nearby 1807 Harlem Avenue soon-to-be early childhood education center.
Amtrak plans to come back late spring / early summer to tell you what they’re going to do with more detailed plans. Their final decision would be the end of Summer 2024.
On the Lafayette Street bridge rebuild and design…
B&P Tunnel - 2 of the 5 bridge replacements are for roads - both done on Midtown-Edmondson
Section 4(f) - Baltimore Rec & Parks is "Official with Jurisdiction". Tim Almaguer and Adam Boarman were on the call. Rec & Parks needs to sign-off on bridge design. Section 4(f) de minimus determination finalized in the next month
One year of construction on the Lafayette Bridge
Closure of park starts in 2026.
Temporary park space may be returned to the community.
Lafayette Ave bridge is going to happen in two phases: Phase 1 is at 90% - all of the area across the entire track right-of-way; Phase 2 is the second part on the Bentalou side, and it may never get rebuilt.

This meeting saw Amtrak as our special guest, to brief us on what what construction in Midtown-Edmondson will look like for the next 10+ years, as they work on the Douglass/B&P Tunnel Project. It was a spirited, free-ranging discussion with an extended Q&A session. A number of key elected and transportation leaders were there to listen on. Amtrak promised to return the meeting and continue the updates as needed
